Tuff Guys Don’t Cry… Yeah, Right!
When I was eight years old, I made a promise to myself that I would never cry again. For decades, I kept that promise working in the maintenance department for the Plymouth School District, doing heavy, physical labor that demanded you toughen up and get the job done.
Now, I’m a straight-shooter and I like to be as honest as can be; but the pain I endured over the last few years caused me to test that “no crying” promise more than once. My story really started about fifteen years ago—on New Year’s Eve, of all things! I was at work cranking on a pipe-wrench that snapped, sending me flying backward, and I slammed into the corner of a concrete wall with my back. That led to a surgery to remove a bone chip that was pressing on my nerves. At the time, I thought that was the end of it.

Retired Plymouth truck driver says, “The Best Call I Ever Made!”
I was afraid I’d end up in a wheelchair! Washing dishes, household chores, yardwork – even ushering at church – everything was affected! Let me tell you my story…
My name is Roland (Rollie) Bruggink, and before retiring 25 years ago, I drove the big trucks for Consolidated Freightways for 35 years. Because of that, I started having back problems, which resulted in me needing a support belt for my back for the last couple years that I worked.

From daily pain meds to, I Can’t Remember the Last Time I Took a Pain Pill!
Procrastination is never good, but when it comes to your health, it’s even worse. Many of us are master procrastinators, and we keep telling ourselves, “Maybe it will go away!” But sometimes, it doesn’t just go away. This is my story…
My name is Tom Goestch, and for 25 years, I was a dairy farmer. Then, I worked for the Adell Co-op for 24 years as a certified chemical applicator – and I drove one of those goofy-looking sprayers.

Sheboygan man discoversm “Getting Old Isn’t for Sissies!”
I haven’t got time for the pain!” Have you ever said that? I know I have. Sometimes, you just don’t have time to be slowed down by pain. Let me tell you my story…
My name is Steve. I’m 59 years old, and I’ve been a mechanic my whole life – that means I’ve been hard on my body for a long time. Actually, my problems started about 40 years ago, when I was in a bad car accident which banged me up pretty good, especially my hip. Then, many years later, I fell out of a bathtub onto my other hip… and that didn’t help matters any.
About six years ago, I started having low back pain. I went to a chiropractor, and at first, it seemed to help a little bit. But then, I would feel everything just shift right back out of place. Sometimes it would shift back the next day, other times it would shift back right after the treatment – while I was walking out of the office. When that happened, I would be right back where I started from… in pain! After going through this same routine for a year, I finally gave up seeing him because it wasn’t really helping at all
“From Constant Pain to Freedom!”
Who am I, and why should you listen to me?
Let me tell you my story…
My name is Rachel Richardson, and I’ve had back pain for as long as I can remember.
You can’t tell from the picture, but I’m a tall gal; because of this, I’ve had poor posture since I was a teenager.
This bad posture (referred to as TALL girl slouch/syndrome), which started in my teens, led to improper body mechanics and movement. I then took these poor body mechanics with me into the factory where I was working, lifting things I shouldn’t have been lifting, and doing it with improper form.

I’m a Big Enough Man to Admit, “My Wife Was Absolutely Right!”
If you suffer with constant, nagging pain – have tried numerous treatments, therapies, pain medication, and even epidural steroid injections, yet you received little or no relief – don’t give up. There is hope! Let me tell you my story…
My name is Mike, and my story begins back when I was 13 years old and I was in a pretty bad car accident. After that, I was told I had a curve in my spine that would probably cause me problems later in life. Well…
About 7 years ago, I started having some low back pain, so I began seeing a chiropractor. This helped for a while, but the pain never completely went away. Then last year, the pain started to intensify and get worse, only now it wasn’t just my low back that hurt, but I also started having pain shooting down the back of my legs. I’m not a big fan of pain medication, and I didn’t think that was a good way to resolve the problem, so I continued to go to the chiropractor. Unfortunately, it didn’t provide complete, long-term relief.

“From Suffering for 20 Years, to 4 Hours of Shopping!”
hat would you do if you lived alone and you hurt so bad that you couldn’t get out of bed in the morning? How would you dress yourself, make your meals, get to work, go shopping, clean your house, and take care of the lawn? Let me tell you my story
My name is Louise, and for the last 20 years, I have suffered with constant low back and hip pain.
During those 20 years, there were times my back would actually lock up on me, and I could barely move. As you can imagine, the pain often kept me from doing a lot of things I wanted and needed to do, which is particularly difficult because I live alone.
For instance, I found it hard to cook a meal without stopping to take breaks and sit down. I couldn’t do the dishes without leaning on the sink. Wiping the floor on my hands and knees was almost impossible, and raking the lawn basically was impossible.

Barely able to stand and shave, “I Could Only Walk 100 Feet!”
You and I may never meet, but if you’re reading this story, we probably have something in common. You see, I used to live a normal life, just like you did. But over time, I started having different aches and pains. I brushed it aside for the most part, taking a pain reliever whenever it got bad – but then, it became unbearable
My name is Marvin Theune, and I’m 82 years old. As a young man, after I got out of the military back in 1956, I farmed for 17 years. Back then, farming involved a lot of hard manual labor and heavy lifting.
After farming, I worked at the Gilson factory in Oostburg for 15 years, assembling garden equipment and cement mixers. After that, I worked at Dutchland Plastics, doing trimming, for another 5 years. So, I definitely had my share of hard physical labor throughout my life – and eventually, it catches up to you.

Suffering with Pain Since Childhood, “All I Could See Was a Wheelchair!”
Having pain of any kind can be a miserable – even crippling condition. Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally, but physically, you feel held back from life because you hurt and the pain just won’t go away! Fortunately, if you are suffering, there may be help. Let me tell you my story…
My name is Kenny B, and I spent most of my life working in the printing business – I even owned my own print shop. Throughout the years, I’ve done a lot of physical labor, and it has taken a toll on my body.
All my life, ever since childhood, I have had back pain of some sort. In fact, I can’t remember ever having a day without pain, and over the years, it started bothering me more and more.

Suffering for seven years… “Every Day, I Felt Like Crying!” How I defeated pain and got my life back…
Pain. No one likes it. Some say it’s a sign of weakness – tough it out, put on a happy face, and eventually the pain will go away. But sometimes, the pain doesn’t go away. And sometimes, it’s hard to smile when you’re really hurting. This is my story…
My name is Wendy. My problems really started about 30 years ago when I weighed over 400 lbs. – a weight I maintained until seven years ago, when I lost 220 lbs. through diet and exercise.
However, once I lost the extra weight, I started feeling lots of problems that had occurred as a result of being so overweight. I started to hurt all over – my neck, my shoulders, my back, my knees, and my ankles. I also started to ‘creak’ and ‘crunch’ all over my entire body.

“From Pain & Pills… To Spry & Spunky!” How I Finally Found Relief…
How would you finish this sentence: “Oh, my aching… feet, knees, hips, back, neck, shoulders, head?” Let me tell you how I would finish it…
My name is Linda Binversie, and I’ve been a pharmacy technician for almost 17 years. I’ve always had jobs standing on my feet, so I’ve done a lot of walking, and I’m usually on my feet all day long. About 12 years I ago, I started having problems with my back and knees. I went to a chiropractor, which seemed to help some. Then I stopped going, and over time, my problems returned.

I went from kidney failure to… “Nerve Damage and Back Pain!” And look at me now…
Sometimes, surgery can save your life. Sometimes, it can leave you crippled. Sometimes, it can do both. This is my story…
My name is John Yellstrom, and I’m a survivor – a kidney transplant survivor. It all really started 25 years ago when I sneezed and ended up with a herniated disc. At that time, I went to the hospital, and they put me in traction to take care of it. Fast forward to five years ago, when I needed a new kidney. I was fortunate enough to receive one – and for that, I am extremely grateful.

Does your back or leg hurt when you move wrong? Do you have difficulty standing or walking? Have you had to give up some of life’s simple pleasures – like playing with your grandkids or golfing – because of pain?
Nothing’s worse than feeling great mentally but physically being held back from life because your back hurts and the pain just won’t go away! Let me tell you my story…
My name is Roger, and between working on the farm and in a machine shop throughout my whole life, I’ve been pretty hard on my body – and at 76 years old, it isn’t getting any easier.

After Reviewing My MRI, the Orthopedic Surgeon Said, “My Back Was Shot!” And here’s what happened…
‘Pop.’ It’s a small, simple little word that can mean a number of different things depending upon its context. But when it refers to a sound you hear coming from your back, well, sometimes it doesn’t turn out so simple… let me tell you my story.
In 1964, I started working for the Kohler Company. Over the years, I did a lot of lifting, twisting, and bending. In 1972, I ruptured a disc in my low back, but I was eventually able to return to work.
Then, on December 20, 1996, while lifting a heavy slab, I felt something ‘pop’ in my back. Immediately, I knew something was wrong. My low back started to hurt and just kept getting worse and worse.

20+ Years of Knee Pain, Gone! How I found relief after years of suffering…
If you couldn’t climb stairs normally, and you had to go up and down them to get to your bedroom, what would you do? Would you slide up and down them on your rear end?
This is my story… My name is Terry, and my problems started more than 20 years ago, right after 9/11 happened.
I was standing at the kitchen counter, stressed out, and I suddenly started having a lot of pain in my knee. Things deteriorated to the point that I couldn’t walk without using crutches to get around. I was upset with myself because I suspected this knee problem was probably due to years of running and walking 5-7 miles a day.

Local chainsaw wielding retiree says… “A Good Doctor Is Hard to Find!”
You’ve probably heard the phrase, ‘A good mechanic is hard to find!’ or ‘A good hairdresser is hard to find!’ Well, let me tell you, ‘A good doctor is hard to find!’ This is my story…
My name is JoAnn Waterman, and before retiring a few years ago, I worked at Gilson Manufacturing, Evans retail store, and eventually American Orthodontics. My story starts waaaaaaaay back when I was 19 years old. You see, I have always loved horses, but when I was 19, I had a horse fall on me and break my pelvis. At the time, I thought I was invincible, so I didn’t have anything done to fix it, and it ended up healing cockeyed.

“She Dragged Me, Kicking & Screaming” And here’s why…
They say you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone, and let me tell you… that is absolutely true. Sometimes, things get so bad that you just give up. Fortunately for me, my family never gave up… this is my story.
My name is Harland Greger, and I work for the Town of Sheboygan Public Works Department. As I’m sure you can imagine, my job is very physically demanding. About a year and a half ago, my whole body started to ache – from the top of my head to the tips of my toes – 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. I had terrible low back pain, and my shoulders, arms, and hands ached constantly.

Battling Back Pain for 20 Years! How I Finally Got My Life Back…
Mayo, Froedtert, chiropractors, physical therapists, and pain management – I’ve been to them all and still had issues. Let me tell you my story…
My name is Janis and I’m a retired nurse. I never had a car accident or motorcycle accident, never fell off a ladder or down the steps, never even had a work injury. But 20 years ago, I started having a lot of back pain. Due to the pain, I couldn’t get in and out of the car or bathtub, and one time, the pain was so bad that I gave my credit card to a complete stranger at a gas station to put gas in my car – because I couldn’t get out of the car!

“I Was Tempted to Give Up!” But I Finally Found Relief…

“Fortunately, The Nurse Told Me!” And here’s what happened…
Thank goodness for nurses! I don’t know what the lifetime lethal dose for painkillers is… and I’m glad I didn’t find out! Now, I’m getting ahead of myself. Let me start at the beginning.
About seven years ago, a casting blew up at work and hit me in the head and face, causing a concussion. Within a week, I started waking up with headaches every morning and would have multiple headaches throughout the day. Then things got worse as I lost the feeling in my hands, and they always felt swollen. It got so bad that I couldn’t tell how hard I was holding a pen.

“From Constant Pain to Marvelous Joy!” How one doctor changed everything…
Have you ever wanted to just give up and die? If so, then I know what you’re going through – because I was at that point. In my case, it was because of unrelenting pain that no one seemed to be able to help. But fortunately, someone came to my rescue… let me tell you my story.
I don’t know what started it, but my problems began about four years ago and gradually got worse as the years went by. My neck was very stiff and painful, and I had pain that would shoot down into my arms. My arms would also fall asleep very easily; in fact, whenever I turned my head to the side, my arms would immediately fall asleep. It was impossible for me to drive a car without my arm hurting constantly.

Retired School Bus Driver Asks Doctor, “Where Have You Been All My Life?”
If you don’t know what it’s like to suffer, then you may not understand. Let me tell you my story…
My name is Bonnie Hartmann. I have suffered with back pain and back problems for more than 25 years. It all started when I was just 18 years old and I had polio which resulted in weakness in my leg. Then, to make matters worse, in my early adulthood, I suffered some other injuries which resulted in damage to my spine. Tack on the fact that I drove a school bus for 18 years, and then I drove an armored truck for another 1½ years, and you can tell that all of this didn’t do my back any good.

At 88 Years Old, I’m No Spring Chicken, “I was Suffering with Low Back Pain, Sciatica, Neck Pain, and Shoulder Pain!” And After 6 Months of Care, I Wasn’t Any Better…
Living with pain can affect every part of your life. It can keep you from enjoying the good things in life–time with your children or grandkids, playing golf, and even just working around the house or out in the yard. And every time you try and push through the pain–like standing or walking for a long period of time–you end up paying for it over the next couple of days with even more pain. If this sounds familiar then let me tell you my story…
My name is Bernetta Brendel and at 88 years old, I’m not exactly a spring chicken. Growing up on a farm, I did a lot of heavy lifting and as a result, I started having back problems way back when I was just a teenager.

I was afraid I would end up permanently disabled… “Neck Pain, Shoulder Pain, Arms Tingled, Low Back Pain, Knee Pain, and Fatigue!” My Journey to Pain-Free Living…
“You don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone!” That statement is so true, yet it’s hard to understand until you’ve actually experienced it.
Let me tell you my story…
My name is Barb, after working in a factory for 39 years – walking on concrete floors and doing heavy lifting day after day – it finally took its toll on my body, and eventually I started having problems. While I was working, it wasn’t so bad because I kept going, but once I retired, things kept getting worse and worse.
